esting. i find it very good and she delivered the talk very well. thanks hazel.
did you notice i used an s first and then z. hi everybody. when andrew asked me
last month to find something to do a lightning talk on, i couldnt think of anyth
ing. so i stole a talk off the internet. hands up those of you that have heard o
f the library of babel. interesting,a room full of techies. for those in the roo
m that havent, its a research project into blisteringly fast full text search on
big data. and by big, i mean big. really big. from nothing, random characters w
ere added to the end of an empty string at an alarming rate, and has been genera
ted at data centre speeds for years. the data is stored in a structure that take
s the metaphor of the library. when you provide an input string to the search en
gine, you will be provided with an exact location in three page in the book on t
he library for that string. every talk tonight will be perfectly transcribed, al
ready. and every talk that will ever be given at any future tech nottingham even
t will already be transcribed, somewhere in the library. to end, i was going to
read you an excerpt but because there is not much time, instead i just posted a
link in slack to the page in question. on this page is the talk that im deliver
ing tonight. its all already written, im just reading it word for word, which is
a great way of looking like youre talking about something intelligently, but ac
tually i havent had to come up with any of it. its all already there. so everyth
ing that im saying, every word, is already perfectly transcribed within the libr
ary of babel. i can see a few smirks, indicating that some of you are already on
the page, but its true. you cant come up with anything on your own any more. no
t a word of this is my own content. even if i say something stupid like crocodil
e dundee elephant dungarees, the words are already written. even if i just make
a noise. meh. bleup. everything is already there and has been for years. its a m
ind blowing concept and im glad i could share it tonight. please have a look at
it later if you find it interesting, and ill leave you with the question, if eve
rything that has ever and will will ever be created is already written down, wha
t is that point in creating or saying anything. blueberries. watermelon watermel
